BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above was held last evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. M. Rathbone), Crs. W. Woods, R. Wedde, G. Hunt, E. E. Bott, L. Strang, F. Eagle and H. C. Collett. Included in the outward correspondence was a notification to Mr. Orbell, mill proprietor; prohibiting the carting of timber on Scrimgeour’s road until arrangements had been made. The action of the Mayor for instructing the letter to be sent, was approved. John Chambers & Sons, Ltd. wrote re changing from suction gas to electricity at waterworks.—Ur. Collett moved that it be referred back to the Water Works Committee to go into the question of the conflict oi opinion between two engineers as to cost ot running, one quote being ±|25U less than the other. Ur. Hunt agreed with the proposal, it only to clear up the latter point. A motion to this effect was carried.
Rabbit inspector, Onga Onga, wrote re rabbiter for coronation Park. —Matter to receive attention. District Health Office, Wellington wrote re increasing the grant toward health inspector’s salary.—Lett in abeyance until the February meeting. W. Barden, D.S.L., and Reardon 4 Wright wrote re hawker's licenses.— the two latter protested that they had not none business in the town as hawkers. Councillors did not agree with this, the overseer was instructed to take steps it further transgression occurred. W. Barden was granted a license. M 44 UCU. UUillA.4, -.X. P., re housing loan. —finance Committee was empowered to make a progress payment to the contractors building Houses under the scheme. A letter ot appreciation is to be sent to Sir George nunter tor the interest he has taken in the matter.
The secretary school committee asked lor grant towards dental chine. —Usual grant ot £lO made on the motion ot Crs. Strang and Hunt. F. Eagle, E. E. Linibrick, H. T. Limbnck applied for sewerage connections to houses now being erected. —Granted subject to approval ol overseer.
Letters were received from several ratepayers advising that properties owned by them had been brought under the Land Transfer Act.
The overseer applied for leave oi absence (annual holiday) in January which was granted. an application irom the chairman of the Retailers’ Association tor a gianr towards the cost of elect lie festoons for the main street on Xmas an! New Year's Eve was entertained and a grant of £1 17/4 (half cost) was authorised.
An application was received from the Library Committee for the usual annual grant of £l5. The Mayor felt that the grant should be withheld until such time as a key to the room was provided for the caretaker of the theatre. After further discussion it was resolved that the Theatre Committee go into the matter and report to a special meeting to be held on Wednesday evening next. GENERAL. It was resolved that the Roads Committee meet and consider the question of improving the eastern side ot the road from between the gas-works and Flynn’s, also the road irom the gas works to the railway station. Dealing with the overseer’s report, it was resolved to notify the unlicensed plumber referred to that he must comply with the borough bylaw. In the matter of the overseer's estimate as regards the extension oi the water main on the Domain road, it was resolved to hold the matter over with a view to raising a loan to comprise this and other necessary works. The report of a committee set up to consider the question of disposing of rubbish was to the effect that an incinerator be provided and it was resolved that . the recommendations be adopted.
The Gas 'Works Committee reported everything satisfactory at the works. The Water Works Committee also reported similarly. The water pumped for the month was 21 million gallons. As regards the gasworks, it was resolved to accept monthly instalments for the purchase of up todate gas stoves, and approval was given Mr. Moir to display his gas stove stands in the Council Chambers.
Authority was given to pay the Plunkct Society £l3, representing six months’ grant. Notices are to be given that accounts outstanding for general purposes must be paid forthwith. The pay-sheet was as follows :— General £437 18/4, gas £37 4/5, waterworks £5O 1 /ll; total £525 4/t. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The oversser reported as follows: The grader has been over all the roads during the month and metal patching attended to where necessary. Sand has been carted and screened in readiness for tarring Water connections have been laid to Mr. Windle’s and to Mrs. Cleary's properties in Melville street, and to Mr. F. Eagle’s property in Matthew street. Mrs. Cleary’s residence has been connected to the main sewer Repairs have been made to hurst water pipes in Kenilworth street, Great North road, High and Waverlev streets, also on County road, and service leading to Mrs. Hobin’s residence. Extra work has been carried out on Corkscrew Gully by raising the road, filling in scour and repair to boundary fence. A start has been made with the concrete culvert at the gasworks. I have to report an unlicensed plumber doing sanitary plumbing in the borough, which is not in accordance with the by-laws. As directed at a previous meeting 1 have prepared estimates for water main extensions,—Waverley street, 33 chains, £442 9/-; Domain road, 18 chains, £250 17/4; Matthew street, 7 J chains. £lOO.
