CHANGES ANNOUNCED PROMOTIONS AND TRANSFERS HAWKE’S BAY NOT AFFECTED. Wellington, December 9. Important changes in the service were announced by the Commissioner of Police (Mr W, B. Mcllveney) this afternoon. Inspector J. C. Willis, of Hamilton, is promoted to the rank of superintendent and is assigned the charge of the Dunedin police district to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Superintenden Murray. Inspector W. Eccles, of Gisborne, is to have charge of the Hamilton district. Inspector O’Halloran of Grevmouth. is to take charge at Gisborne. Sub-Inspector J A. Mathew, of Christchurch, is promoted to inspector in charge of the Greymouth district.
Senior-Sergeant J. Fitzpatrick, oi Christchurch, is promoted to the rank of a sub-inspector, and is to remain in that city
The inspector at Auckland has been overburdened with work and to give him much needed relief, an assistant inspector has been allotted to Auckland Central. Inspector Hollis, of Whangaeri. is to fill this position. Inspector Hollis has been many years in the detective branch as a detective-sergeant, and part of hi s duties will be to supervise the detective force at Auckland
Sub-Inspector P. Harvev. of Wellington ,is promoted to the rank of inspector, and will take charge of the" Whangarei district. Sub-Inspector F. Lewin, of Auckland, is to go to Nelson to take charge of the Nelson-Marlborough division of the Wellington polioe district. It is intended later, when the necessary provision has been made to seperate this area from Wellington and make it a seperate police district with an inspector m charge. Sub-Irispector Lewin will be promoted to this position in due course.
Senior-Sergeant P- J. McCarthy, of Auckland, is promoted to the rank of sub-inspector, with headquarters in that city. Senior-Sergeant J. Lander, of Wellington. is also promoted to the rank of sub-inspector. He will remain in Wellington. TRANSFERRED TO UNIFORM BRANCH. Senior-Detective W. E. Letsis. of Christchurch, is transfered to the uniform branch, with the corresponding designation of senior-sergeant, and will remain in that ctiy. He is next in order of seniority for commissioned rank and as he has seen nearl- all his service in the detective branch, it is in the interests of both the force and the public that he should have some experience in the uniform branch before being commissioned. This interchange of duties is specially provided for in the regulations. Senior-Detective J. Cummings, of Auckland, is also transfered to the uniform branch, with the corresponding designation of senior-sergeant. He will remain in Auckland and the same remarks as are made about Senior-Sergeant Lewis apply equally to him.
Senior-Detective A. Hammond, of Auckland is to have charge of the detective staff there with the designation of chief detective.
Sergt. E. J. Whitehouse, of Wellington, is promoted to the rank of senior-sergeant, with headquarters here.
Detective—Sergeant J. Caroil. of Invercargill, is appointed senior detective in charge of the detective office at Christchurch, with the designation of chief detective. Sergean J. Fox of InverfcargiU. is to be senior-sergeant there. These arangements, states the Commissioner, provide for the filling of several vacancies by the • best available officers for the respective positions. ■ Other changes are .—-Constable D. Clark, of Russell, to be sectional sergeant at Auckland; Constable A. A Mitchell, of Havelock, to taae charge at Russell; Sergeant .C. 11. McGlone, of Clyde, to replace SeniorSergeant Scandrett (resigned) at Westport: Sergeant J. H. Armstrong, of Wellington, to take charge at Clyde; Constable J. F. Cleary, of Cambridge, to be sergeant, replacing Sergeant Armstrong at Wellington. The Commissioner has not appointed a commissioned officer to fill the vacancy caused bv the retirement if Superintendent Broberg. and intends to undertake the additional duties himself. The division of the Auckland police district, adds Mr Mcllveney, and the allocation of the duties of commissioned officers there will be communicated to them at an early date.
