COUNCIL RECEIVES REPORTS ON PROGRESS OF PAST MONTH. MATTERS INTERESTING TO RATEPAYERS The regular meeting of the Hustings Borough Council was held last evening, when Cr. S- J. McKee occupied the chair in the absence of the Mayor (Mr G. A. Maddison) and the Deputy-Mayor (Cr M. Johnson). Others present were: Crs. E. V. Simpson, T. Donovan. J. Simmons, G. C. Lowe, R. Henderson, A. I. Rainbow, and R Baker. Relative to the matter of saleyards Mr H. A. Williams wrote acknowledging the Council’s letter in connection with the report recently made and suggesting that a further conference of the. Council’s representatives and representatives of the saleyards owners should take place. —The Town Clerk was given power to represent the Council at the suggested conference. The New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers wrote advising that the annual conference of the society will be held in Wellington on the 21st February next, and asking that facilities be granted the engineers to be present and take part in the proceedings.—The request was granted. Reporting to the Works Committee of the Council, the borough engineer stated that the total number cf water and sewerage connections was now 2763. The water pumped for the month was as follows, the figures in parentheses being those of November last year : —Havelock : 4,284,571 gallons (5,246,000); power station. 17,600,000 gallons (17,065,000). Total, 21,884,571 gallons (22,311.000). Total cost £2lO 2s 2d (£242 7s). The total pumping for the eight months ending November 30 was 158,674,000 gallons, compared with 151,832,000 for the corresponding period last year. The engineer further reported: A start was made with this season s hot mixing surfacing work on November 2nd, that portion of Nelson street from Eastbourne street to St. Aubyn street being put in hand. This length would have been about completed but for a delay of three days, necessitated by the tubes of the roller requiring attention. The foundation work was being kept ahead of the surfacing, and the work should be able to proceed without interruption providing the weather conditions were suitable. The full number of pipes required for the pumping main from the power-house to Heretaunga street had arrived. The whole of the pipes had been tested under water pressure, and a start had been made with the work of laying. As soon as the pumping main was completed a start would be made with the concrete footpaths in Market street north and Fitzrov avenue going east from Gray’s road The librarian reported that during the month of November eleven new subscribers joined, making the totals at adults 562, children 367.
