FARMERS’ UNION
HAWKE'S BAY EXECUTIVE. GENERAL BUSINESS. The Hawke’s Bay executive of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union met in Hastings yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. H. Joll, president, being in the chair. E. H. Williams, solicitor, enclosed copy of the Howard Estate Amendment Act, showing the portions struck out by the Upper House.— Received. Southern Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Union, (Danncvirke) wrote regarding the advisory board of five members which may be set up in connection with the Howard Estate, pointed out that the very best should be done to secure the best possible men for the board. It was suggested that if the Hawke’s Bay Executive and Southern Hawke’s Bay worked in harmony, they could wield sufficient influence to get the right class of men on the Board. The letter suggested Air. J. Livingston, of their provincial district as a suitable representative of the province on the Board.—The secretary is to enquire as to what Mr. Linvingston’s ideas are regarding the disposal of the Smedley income. H.B. A. and P. Society, writing regarding payment of travelling expenses in connection with the Smedley Estate, said that the members did not approve the principle of paying delegates attending meetings or conferences and, therefore, they could not see their way to forward the £9 9/- asked for.—'The chairman said that he had instructed the secretary to reply, saying that the payment asked for was for remuneration hut was merely the payment of the out-of-pocket expenses entailed, on those who travelled through the country inspecting properties, in accordance with the responsibilities .
placed upon them by the public bodies. The chairman’s action was endorsed. Hastings Borough Council invited members of the executive to be present at the civic reception to be extended to the Rt. Hon. L. S. Amery and Mrs. Amery on the afternoon of December 16th.—Invitation accepted. The Dominion secretary informed the branch that Mr. Polson’s evidence regarding the Arbitration Act closely followed the policy laid' down at the last Dominion conference. The papers stated he “condemned” the exemption of farmers from Arbitration Court awards, whereas he commended it.—Received.
