DOUBLY-PAID RATES

COUNCIL ALLOWED TO MAKE REFUND. AUDIT DEPARTMENT GIVES ITS PERMISSION. Recently it was reported nt a meeting of the Hastings Borougli Council that should rates be paid twice then the council had , no authority to make a refund of the amount p.iid in excess. It- will be remembered that though the council was prepared to. and considered it only just that it should make the refund, its hands were tied in regard to two cases of doubly paid rates. The full facts of the cases were submitted to Government officials in Wellington and a reply was received at last evening’s meeting of the council from the Audit Department. The communication intimated that in view of the circumstances under which the rates were paid twice the Audit Office was of the opinion that the borough may refund the amounts overpaid. It was decided bv the council that these amounts he now refunded.
