CAPT. HELD BY BANDITS FAIL TO APPEAR WHEN INTERMEDIARY ARRIVES. A MYSTERIOUS SILENCE. [British Official Wireless.] (Received 9, 12.30 p.m.) Rugby, December 8. The Scottish missionary, Mr Forbes Tocher, who has acted as an intermediary, went ,as arranged, in a launch to Paiyang. where two unarmed pirates were embarked and proceeded to rendezvous a few miles distant, where Captain Lalor was to have been handed over. Captain Lalor and his captors did not appear, but it is hoped his release will be effected in the near future.
20,000 DOLLARS RANSOM
(Received 9, 8.30 a.m.) Hong Kong, December 8.
The naval authorities report a mysterious silence since a missionary named Tocher left yesterday morning, caryihg the 20,000 dollars ransom for Captain Lalor. Tocher departed in the company of the bandits for a rendezvous with the pirate chief, who undertook to hand over Captain Lalor.—(Sydney “Sun” cable.)
