The engagement is announced of Miss F. Lomas, of Hastings and Mr. W. Parkyn, of Te Mata. Havelock North.

Mr and Mrs ,H. Holderness left Hastings this morning for Christchurch. They will be absent for about ten days.

The death is recorded from London of Lieutenant-General Sir Arthnr Holland, Conservative member of the House of Commons for Northampton.

Mr. L. M. Amery, Secretary of State for the Colonies and Dominion Affairs, will arrive at Nelson on Monday on his way back to Welling, ton. On Tuesday he will officially open the new biological control station in connection «.th the Cawthron Institute, where it is expected that good work will be done in connection with the control of insect pests. On Wednesday next Mr. Amery will be the guest at luncheon of the Wellington Employers' Association, Wellington Chamber of Commerce and Wellington Manufacture's* Association.

General regret was expressed in Hastings at the news of the death of Mrs Ada J a lie Btmrmand, Wife of Mr. Joseph Stairman. of Hastings which took place at the Napier Hospital yeisterday. The deceased, who was only 51 years of age, lived all her life in Hastings, where she was held in the highest esteem and affection by all who knew her. She leaves her husband and four grown-up daughters to mourn her, and with them much sympathy is expressed. The funeral took place this afternoon, when the W body was conveyed to the Hastings ’ cemetery, where the Rev F. Copeland. conducted the Methodist burial service, in the presence of a large gathering of mourners.
