It was reported at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council .ust evening that a great deal of inisehiol was still being carried on at Victoria Square, attempts being made to wrench off some of the seats and splintering the front panels. The matter has been placed in the hands of the police.
Leslie Renwick, single, aged 27. was sentenced to three months’ hard labour on charges of breaking, entering and theft, bv Mr. Justice Herdman at Hamilton who declined to admit him to probation, remarking that this class of offence was too common.—(Press Association.)

The executive of the Napier Mardi Gras met last night, when it was reported that the Borough Council had given permission for the use ot the Parade on December 2C 27 and 31, and that new lamps ordered bv the council should be on hand in time. After various proposals for competitions had been put before the committee the meeting closed.
The Heretaunga Squadron of Frontiersmen held their adjourned meeting this week, which was postponed owing to . General Sir Andrew Russell being in Wellington and the O.C. being on the sick list. The usual routine business was gone through, and the secretary recorded a fair bank balapce and no liabilities. The balance-sheet and annual report wr r< read and adopted. All the officers were re-elected. In the absence of any report from Wanganui as to what was done there, certain impol i ant matters could not be deait with.
A suggestion that Heretaunga street between Hastings street and Nelson slrtel, mid Russell street between Heretaunga street and Vuccn
street, be closed to ail vehicular traffic between the hours ot ,j,30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. ou Christmas and New Year’s Eve, was made by tin Traffic Inspector at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council l ist evening. The inspector explained that to efficiently control the traiiii in these streets on the nights mentioned would entail tk.q services o' nine extra men. On the recommendation of the committee it was d. tided to adopt the suggestion.
