ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
(Per Press Association). A motoring fatality occurred on the Taieri ferry bridge at 10.30 yesterday morning, resulting m the death of the driver, Mrs Frank Steans. of 35 Albert street. Gladstone, Invercargill. Deceased, with her husband and sister-in-law. was returning from a visit to Christchurch in a Nash sedan car and failed to negotiate a turn at the bridge. The car crossed from its correct side, first colliding with a Sir driven by Randel John Montgomery, of Lawrence, approaching from the opposite direction. The Nash car plunged mto the Taieri river. Mr. Steans was unable to extricate his wife who was drowned.
Another of the accidents for which the West street (Palmerston North) railwav crossing is becoming notorious occurred at 10 o’clock yesterday morning when a mixed train from Paekakariki struck a motor lorry driven by W. H. Strange. Heavy rain was falling at the time, the driver of the lorry st-'ing roar he neither heard nor saw the oncoming train. Strange had a remarkable escape from death, remaining in tho cab of the motor, which was thrown across the road. The front part, including the driver’s scat, was completely wrecked.
