Captain D. P. Malcolm, of the Bengal pilot service, whose home town is Christchurch arrived from Sydney bv the Marama on Tuesday on holiday. He will fish at Rotorua.

Mr. and Mrs. S. Cox arrived in Hastings by last night’s mail train after an extended visit to England and the Continent.

A Sydney cable states that Mr. G. N, Kneen, general manager of the Commonwealth Line, has been appointed to the Commonwealth Shipping Board in succession to Mr. Clarkson.

Signor Anzilotti, Italy, has been elected president of the Permanent Court of International Justice for 1928-30, succeeding M. Huber, Switzerland.

Mr. Richard Hutton Richmond, of Christchurch, hqs died at the age of 64 years. He ,was a prominent Freemason, having been Acting-Grand-master for New Zealand.—Press Assn.

Mr. J. Cameron, of Southland Road, Hastings, who entered Royston Hospital some weeks ago for an operation, is, his many friends will be pleased to learn, recovered sufficiently to return home.

The Rev. Father O’Shaunnessy, who has been on leave for tho benefit of his health, arrived in Hastings by last evening’s mail train tor a few days’ stay. He is looking very well after hi* rest.

Mr. John Cook, of St. Leonards, who died yesterday, aged 77 years, was born in Glasgow, where he served his apprenticeship to the engineering trade, and later served in the ships of the Anchor and Cunard lines. Deceased came to New Zealand in 1875 as chief engineer of the Taiaroa and in a similar capacity later on the Hawea, Rotorua and Wakatipu. From 1887 to 1920 he was superintending engineer of the Union Steamship Co. He was then associated with the Stevenson and Cook Engineering Company. He leaves a widow, four sons, and’three daughters.
