Cyril Goldfinch was charged with Sa motor-cycle at a greater than 25 miles an hour within tiles of Havelock North. A plea of not guilty was entered by Mr C. Duff on behalf of the defendant
Mr H. de Denne, who appeared on behalf of the County Council, stated that the case was the result of a S. tition bv a large number of resients of Pukahu to have the speeding terminated, as it was a nuisance. Evidence was given by several residents that the defendant was travelling from 40 to 60 miles per hour. After hearing the evidence counsel altered the plea to guilty. He pointed out that the road was fiat, wide and straight and considered one of the best roads in the district. The houses were separated. The defendant was required by his employers to make tests. He was of the opinion that he was allowed to take liberties on country roads of this character. The reason why the plea of not guilty was entered was to ascertain the spirit of ill-feeling existing between the parties. The defendant was an experienced rider. His Worship stated that the evidance would indicate that the settlers had determined to make an end to the speeding and noise. He was afraid that the young people who rode motor-cycles did not care about the sufferings of others. Because there were good roads, it did not mean that residents should be annoyed.
