NEW AIRSHIPS
HOPING TO PAY FOR UPKEEP >■ — ONE TO BE USED AS AIRCRAFT CARRIER. • TEST FLIGHT TO INDIA. IBy Cable —Press Aun. - Copyright.) (Received 7, 1.10 p.m.) London, Dec. 6. The Air Ministry is discussing the employment of one of the dew big airships, probably RlOl. as an aircraft carrier to pay for its keep during the initial test flight without passengers from England to India. It is suggested that it should carry new aeroplanes outward, returning with old ones requiring reconditioning. It is considered that it could carry eight two-seaters of the de Haviland Hound class and a dozen smaller single-seater fighters, which could be dropped anywhere in Egypt or Iraq while others were re-hooked in mid-air as demonstrated at Fulham. Both the new airships could, in war time, be converted into Air Force carriers, probably of the type of Lieut. Webster’s Schneider Cup winner, which, by virtue of its speed, would be practically immune to gunfire.—(A. and N.Z.)
