Wellington’s latest free innovation, the free ambulance service, is not iq coo good a position financially. It was pointed out at last night's meeting that there arc only enough funds in hand to pay die staff for six months; added to this, there are only tour good machines running,- and a minimum of ten is needed. At the present moment two of the machines cannot be relied on. The committee is of opinion that the danger point is being reached and that at least two more ambulances arc needed urgently. In view of the present financial position, the committee sees no option out to appeal to some of Wellington's generous-hearted people to follow the example of the president and donate tho two ambulances immediately required.
The Petone branch of the A.S.R.S. has passed tne following resolution: “That this mass meeting of the Ketone Railway Workshops’ employees views with alarm the ever increasing amount of traffic secured by motors to the detriment of tho railway service, which may affect the livelihood of railway employees; that goods carried by motors are usually those carried at A I> and C class rates, whilst the department is compelled to receive consignments of other classes of goods whiih ni.i not so remunerative. We believe, further, that good results would bo obtained if all employees rcr-ipnu-ato with those traders who patronise the railway service and w» vi ■ - upon the Government th« ■unie nece-rity of nationalising th,- transport industry.”
