WAIPUKURAU
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce, held last night, was presided over by Mr. E. A. Goodger, president. The president reported on various executive activities including conferring, in company with the Mayor, with military representatives, as to the details in connection with the forthcoming camp to be held in Waipukurau; referred to the matter of local firms being enabled to tender for camp supplies as raised by Sir George Hunter, M.P., in the House; entertainment of the men in camp; co-operation with the Mayor as to the recent public meeting of protest anent the dangerous Ruataniwha street railway crossing; and the attach of a delegate to the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, upon the Public Trust Office which office he wholeheartedly defended.
The need for lowering the bluff on the road between Waipukurau and Onga Ouga was referred to Mr. K. McLean (Mayor) and on his motion, seconded by Mr. T. G. Given, a resolution was carried to the effect that the executive take the necessary steps to promote this objective. On the proposition of Mr. A. C. Holms it was decided to ascertain from the Waipukurau County Council whether any advise had been received from the Main Highways Board anent the promised report and survey of the proposed deviation of the Wai-pukurau-Takapau road via the Lower Gorge (Waipukurau-Onga road). Mr. Hohns raised the question of organising the retailers as to holidays from tune to time and eventually Mr. Hall gave Notice of motion as follows: “That a sub-committee ui the chamber be sef up. to act as a Holidays Committee and take steps io organise the retailers in this connection.’’ SPORTS GROUND CARNIVAL In collection with the Sports Ground queen carnival a general executive meeting was held last night Mr Gavin Black presiding. It was decided to hold the opening outdoor function, including a procession to Russell Park on- the 14th prox. The financing, if necessary, of the pur chase of a small additional section of laud was authorised. The holding of a queens concert—3o minutes being attached to each—wa s agreed to. also the inclusion of an elocutionary and musical concert in the programme of the country queen committee’s activities. GENERAL NOTES. Central Hawke’s Bav is now in ehe enjoyment of ideal summer weather and the changed order from the cold weather experienced last week should be much appreciated. The progress of shearing and haymaking operations will be greatly facilitated by the advent »f a few days of sunshine. Mrs S. Mann, who has been spending a fortnight's holiday as the guest of Mrs T. A. Glenny. of Tikokino, returned home during the week-end. Miss Lily Welch has been selected as the country queen candidate in connection with the Sports Ground carnival campaign.
