OUTBREAK AT CAMBRIDGE BLOCK BURNT OUT. TOTAL LOSSES HEAVY. . (Per Press Association). Cambridge, December 6. A block of nine wooden shop premises in Duke street was demolished by fire at midnight last night. Five other buildings were saved by the magnificent efforts of the brigade assisted by a splendid new waler supply with a good pressure. The fire started in the storeroom at the rear of the Farmers’ Trading Company, and quickly spread to a big block nearby. The brigade checked the spread, saving several wooden buildings in the same block. Fortunately, there was no wind or it might have crossed the street to some handsome new buildings immediately opposite, which narrowly escaped. As it was. nine or ten large plate-glass windows were cracked. The cause of the fire is unknown. THE INSURANCES. The losses will lie verv heavy in each instance as all the shops were earying heavy stocks for the Christmas trade. The corner block of building* <.*. - ed bv E. Neale, was insured lor £2500 in the South British Co Neale will be a heavy loser aborts this. Ruges (owner and occupier) had a cover of £6OO on his building in the Northern Officer The insurance on his stock of ironmongery is not available. 'Hie Farmers' Trading Company was insured for aliont £lOOO (on stock) >n the South British. Murray’s Restaurant. £lOO on fittings, etc., in the Atlas Office; Keye’s confectionery stock £lOO in the National Office. Railton and Bycroft, cycle agents, stock £4OO in the Victoria Office: Miss Connolly, stock of boots, £7OO in the State Office; Reuben Howe, fruiterer, fiad no insurance; J. Kidd, saddler, stock £3OO in the Victoria Office; Hally Trustees (D, J. Lundon) £250 on solicitor’s offices in the Royal in France ; H. Nash, fish shop, building £5OO. and fittings, etc.. £l5O in die Royal. CABLES FUSE. OUTBREAK IN SYDNEY WAREHOUSE. (Received 6, 11.15 a.m.) Sydney December 6. Fire. which was caused by the fusing 'of high power cables used for lighting the building, commenced early this morning in David Jones’ emporium, in Castlereagh street, iff the city. It was subdued after a hard fight, but extensive damage wag caused to the stock by water.
