SHEFFIELD SHIELD VICTORIA DECLARES. SOUTH AUSTRALIA FOLLOWS . ON. • Adelaide, Dec. 5. In the Sheffield Shield match Victoria declared at Saturday’s score of eight for 646. Bowling: Grimmett three for 175, Williams two for 119, Halcombe one for 119, Whitefield one for 100, Schneider one for 23, South Australia in the first innings made 117 (Schneider 21, Richardson 21, Whitfield 48; bowling, Morton four for 35, Ironmonger five for 50), and in the second innings none for 55 when stumps were drawn (Larris 27 not out, Johnson 25 not out). Rain during the night made the pitch wet and slippery, but the weather to-day kept fair for play. Victoria having declared at Saturday’s total, South Australia started their first innings under adverse conditions and made a poor showing against the bowling of Morton and Ironmonger, who, taking every advantage of the state of the pitch, got in some destructive work. Richardson, Schneider and Whitfield were the only batsmen to make any headway against the attack. When South Australia followed on conditions had improved, and at the close of the day’s play the opening batsmen still held their wicket.
