ALLEGED SPIES

CASE AGAINST HANSEN AND McCartney UNDERWRITER'S EVIDENCE. ACCEPTED £25 FOR FICTITIOUS INFORMATION. [By Cable — Prese Assn. — Copyright.) (Received 6, 11.15 a.m.) London, Dec, 5. When the Court re-opened and proceeded with the case against the alleged spies, Hansen and McCartney, Moukland, under cross-examination, said he told McCartney he might, as an underwriter, get information regarding shipments of arms to Russia’s border States from Britain. He did not suspect that McCartney was actting against Britain until he received the first questionnaire. He admitted that he had previously accepted £25 for fictitious information merely in order to discover McCartney’s object. He was unable to say what he would have done with the money it McCartney had never reappeared. It was a week or a fortnight later when he consulted the authorities. He adopted a dual pose after interviewing Admiral Hall. He was unable to understand the phrase in the letter, "The remuneration he (meaning Monkland) asked is large,” because he never demanded more money. Admiral Hall was giving evidence as to how he arranged with Monkland to meet the chief of the Government Department when Sir Travers Humphreys asked that it be heard in camera and the Cqurt was cleared.— (A. and N.Z.)
