GENERAL NEWS. For the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation ol Mr. G. Limbrick, two nominations were handed in at noon on Wednesday, the aspirants tor municipal honours being Walter Horace James and Wallace Edwin Yates. The latter has previously served two terms on the Council. At a special meeting of the Wai pawa Racing Club to consider improvements to the course, it was decided to remove the grandstand and other buildings to a sit near the main road. The alterations will be a considerable convenience to patrons. Matriculation examination for pupils of the Waipawa District High School and other schools of Central Hawke's Bay commenced at Waipawa this morning. Several members of the Waipawa Croquet Club paid a visit to Napier on Wednesday to take part in the opening of the Napier Club’s greens. The Waipawa tennis court presented an animated appearance on Wednesday afternoon, a large number being present when a Yankee tournament was commenced. The banks and premises of the legal fraternity were closed on Wednesday for St. Andrew's Day The Methodist Maori Mission party appeared at the Municipal Theatre on Wednesday evening and gave a pleasing programme of vocal and instrumental items, which was much appreciated. Mr. J. Dick, successor to Mr. J. Corskie on the local postal staff, has taken up his duties. Mr. Corskie has also taken up his duties at Hastings, where he was transferred, and on the eve of his departure, and in addition to presentation already recorded he was met by the business people and presented with a case of fish knives and forks. In making the presentation the Mayor (Mr. H. M. Rathbone) spoke in felicitous terms of the guest and referred to his manyyears’ association with the local post office and his efficiency and courtesy. Mr. Edward McLean, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. P. McLean, and who hat been a pupil of Selwyn University College. Dunedin, has been successful in passing in all subjects in his fourth year’s medical course.
Mr. W. Angus, of Tonga, and son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Angus. Waipawa, returned by car to Auckland on Wednesday after spending a holiday with his parents.
