In the Auckland Police Court, Arthur Hooper, aged 28, a fireman on the steamer Tofua, pleaded guiltv to assaulting Mr. Haughton, the third engineer, on the high seas on November 18th. While much under the influence of liquor he struck Haughton forcibly, and inter was prevented by the second engineer from using a knife on Haughton. The accused was fined £s.—Press. Assn. The friends of Mrs. J. T. Currie, Avenue Road. Hastings, will regret to learn that she has received news of the sudden death of her brother-in-law. Mr. David Smith, of Dunedin. Mrs. Currie leaves by the express for the South to-morrow.
