ST. ANDREW’S DAY

This is St. Andrew’s Day. Tradition has it that the bones of the patron saint of Scotland were carried from the Holy Land and buried near the city on the Fifeshire coast that now bears his name. The Scottish flag consists of a white cross saltire (i.e., a diagonal cross) upon a blue field. Its origin has a double tradition. The saint was martyred' on a cross so shaped, it is said. The other explantion of the standard is that when the Picts and Scots, in the days when the country was settling down, banded themselves together to ward off their common enemy, the Sdxons from the south, the leader of the Piets, after a prayei for victory, had a vision of a white cross high in the blue sky. He immediately adopted the vision as his banner, and under it the Picts and Scots went forward to victory: and under it still the sons of Scotland willingly rally in times of need.
