Mr. K. S. Chilton, of Invercargill, is at present on a visit to Hastings. Mr. George Giffen, an old-time famous cricketer, has died at Adelaide. Mr. W. TV Adams, supervisor 01 the Hastings borough reserves leaves to-morrow for the South on his annual leave. Dr. Kidson, Director of the Government Meteorological Office,, will visit Napier during his stay in vnis mstrict and he anticipates leaving on his return to Wellington to-morrow. After being clerk to the Howick Town Board for 16 years, Mr. A. Gerring has decided ‘to resign and enter into retirement. He is 83 years of age. After a critical operation in the Palmerston North Hospital last Tuesday, Mr. John Stevenson, of Bulls, at the age of 84, is making an excellent recovery. / Mr. Allen Kitchen who lias been on a visit to his brother, Dr. Kitchen, of Hastings, left this morning on his return to Wanganui, prior to his departure for England, where he intends taking a course of study in optics. At the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association in Hastings last evening, a vote’ of condolence was passed to the widow and family of the late Mr. J. Gibson, who, prior to his death, was a longstanding member of the Association. Dr. E. P. Ellison, Director of Maori Hygiene, was welcomed by the Waikato Maoris at the Waahi pa on Saturday. He was declared a worthy successor to Te Rangihiroa (Dr. P. H. Buck), and was christened Taiaroa. AH the hapus were represented, and the director was received by “King” Te Bata. The death occurred in Blenheim on Saturday last of Mrs Harold Rhind. of Picton, after a long and distressing illness. The late Mrs Bhind. who was about 43 years of age, had u most worthy record during the war when she saw active service which permanently undermined her health. She was a nurse at the Trentham Vamp during the influenza epidem , and her devoted service among tinsoldiers earned their undying gratitude. Mrs Rhind also saw service in Egypt with the Volunteer Sisters, but was invalided home and had -n--joyed but indifference health since. Among the guests at the Masonic Hotek Napier, are:—Mrs. L. Graham, W. G. Williams, H. Crisbv (Wanganui), H. Cooper (Nelson), W. A. Lingly (Gisborne), C. A. Anderson (Auckland). After an adventurous career at sea Captain Harold Harris, senior master of the Wellington ’Harbour Board’s suction dredge, has retired, and has been ordained as deacon. Next month he will take up the work of assistantcurate at St. Peter’s Church. In 1915, when in charge as prize officer of an American ship, carrying contraband cotton, Captain Harris was captured by the German submarine U3l and, taken to Cuxhaven. Captain Harris was second officer on the Wiltshire when she was wrecked at the Gerat Barrier. Sinee then he has been employed by the Canterbury Shipping Company, the Wanganui Harbour Board and the Wellington Harbour Board. In April, 1826, he was promoted to lieutenant-com-mander in the Royal Naval Reserve.
