LAST NIGHT’S GALE

NO DAMAGE REPORTED. FRUIT CROPS UNAFFECTED. A howling gale blew from the south-west last night, causing the timber in wooden houses to strain and loose iron roofings to rattle in an alarming manner. The wind continued to blow strongly during the night, but beyond sopie branches of trees and perhaps a tree or two being blown down, no senous damage is reported. Inquiry from orehardists elicited the reassuring information that the fruit crops have not been affected nnd that, though there must be a certain amount of windfalls the result has been only to cause some necessary thinning, which wih save the I niitgrowers labour later on
