THE FLOWER SHOW
FRAGRANCE AND COLOUR. The Florer Shows are becoming quite a popular social rendezvous non in Hastings, for with the convenient, proximity of the afternoon tea room many invite their friends there, and then together they look at the flower* with renewed interest after a little rest with the “cup tnat cheers.” The tea-rooms looked pretty with their small tables arranged with spotless cloths, having on each a light and attractive vase full of th* new “sunbeam” poppies. All clad-in dainty and fanciful aprons were a numbbr of helpers who busily attended to the wants of the public. Girls assisting were Miss Joan Landels, Misses Symes (8). Miss S. McLeod. Miss Sheila Murray, and as usual supervising the tea were Mrs T. B. McNeil and Mrs Masterson. There was a very interesting and most fragrant display of the flowers of early summer, and the decorative classes, as usual, helped greatly to increase the general interest in the show. On entering the door a stand of vegetables was piled with lettuces, gooseberries, and plates of crimson luscious strawberries which were ad. mired and criticised by many an amateur vegetable gardener. By the size of the strawberries shown it would seem to be a good year. There were several new competitors in the decorative classes. Mrs Mortimer Jones proving herself an artist in her various displays, and her work was greatly admired. Also Mrs Maurice Chambers won several prizes, and her entries showed a charming choice of colour. Mrs Penlington showed considerable originality in her ideas, and her novel table of massed scarlet geranium, and in another class the quaint old-world conventional bunch of flowers attracted admiring comment- Mrs Appleby always gains many prizes for her beautifully light arrangement of flowers. Her tangerine mantlepiece with graceful sprays of copper beech was dainty in the extreme. Visitors went from one stand to another admiring and criticising, but never losing interest in the varied and charming show of roses, carnations, amarillys. ins, sweet peas, and all the host of sweet-scented flower* that fill the gardens now. Among those viewing the show were seen Mrs H M. Campbell, Mrs Richmond. Mrs T. B. McNeil, M'S and Miss Colin White, Mrs J. Mao farlane, Mrs Gascoyne. Mrs Gilbert son. Mrs Masterson, Mrs Lyons, Mrs P. H. Burr. Mrs Waterworth, Miss Wright, Mr and Mrs S Williams. Mr and Mrs C. Baker Mrs Appleby, Rev. and Mrs C Mortimer-eones, Mrs Hogg, Mrs Swan. Miss Bullow, Mrs L.
