HAWKE CUP PRELIMINARY. WAIROA v. HAWKE'S BAY. Requiring 470 to save an innings defeat, Wairoa entered upon its second innings a little past noon today against Hawke’s Bay in the preliminary match to decide the right to challenge for the Hawke Cup. Yesterday Hawke’s Bay made 591, to which Wairoa replied with 121. Today Barton and Thomas opened -the second innings, facing Temperton and O’Brien. Barton opened his account with a couple of fours, then his partner settled down to hit hard. Runs mounted quickly, and the bowling being changed with-the score at 39. Still the runs came and at the luncheon adjournment the batsmen were unbeaten, the score reading 54 for no wickets. Details:— HAWKE’S BAY. First Innings 591 WAIROA. First Innings 121 Second Innings. Barton, not out 13 Thomas, not out 37 Extras 4 Total for no wkts 54 PRESENTATION TO LOWRY. The Hawke's Bay' Cricket Association has made arrangements for this afternoon for making a presentation to Mr. Tom Lowry, the skipper of the New Zealand team that visited England. The function is scheduled to take place at Nelson Park, Napier, at 4 p.m. VISITORS ENTERTAINED. To-day the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association entertained the vis'tm and local cricketers at a luncheon at the Masonic Hotel. Mr. R. Worker, on behalf of the home team, expressed his pleasure of renewing old acquaintances and trusted that the visitors would en’e to the full their brief stay in Napier. Mr. Barton, skipper ol the visiting combination, thanked the Association and the local cricketers lor their courtesy and sportsmanship. He congratulated the home team on its batting performance, not so much as regards the tall score, but more from the aspect of good powerful hitting. He was of the opinion that Hawke’s Bay was the best batting team in the Hawke Cup competition.
