The annual general meeting of delegates to the Hawke’s Bay Amateur Swimming Centre is to be held at the Municipal Baths, Napier, at 7.45 p.m. on Thursday next when the following annual report is to be presented :— “The centre desires to congratulate all concerned on the very successful working of the past season and on the financial position attained. PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. “As recommended by the subcommittee the Provincial Championships were conducted at two carnivals, instead of three as in the past, these being held on Bth and 10th January. Although the standard ol competition was high and the meeting successful in every other respect, the centre again suffered a siigln financial loss. It has been suggested that if the centre conducted the championships later in the season it would have a much better opportunity of making them a paying proposition. The results of the meetings were as follows:—Men—so yards: T. Haughton (Te Awa) 1, H. Rose (Heretaunga) and R,. Blewden (Tc Awa) 2. 100 yards:—T. Haughton (Te Awa) 1, C. The centre was well represented at the National Championships held at Auckland, and several members were successful in gaining places in then events. Miss M. Simmonds gained first place in the 220 yards Intermediate Girls Championship and second place in the 100 yards event. Miss Z. Fryer gained second place in the Junior Girls 50 yards Breaststroke Championship although this young swimmer had never before competed in any championship event, either provincial or national. VISITING SWIMMERS. “Following the National , meeting, Mr. D. P. Lindsay, of Christchurch, appeared at two carnivals in this district due to efforts on the part of the Heretaunga and Te Awa Clubs. Later in the season Miss E. Stockley and Miss K. Miller appeared at carnivals at Gisborne and Napier through the efforts of the Gisborne and Olympic Clubs of Gisborne and the Napier Club. The centre and affiliated clubs desire to thank the swimmers mentioned above for the splendid exhibitions given and for their untiring efforts in coaching and advising swimmers of the district. RECORDS ESTABLISHED. “New Zealand record certificates for Airs. F. Kirkman (nee Miss Q. Nuttall) and for Miss L. Freedman have just come to hand from the N.Z. Council. Miss Nuttall established a 220 yards ladies’ breaststroke record at Wanganui on 28th January, 1924. Several swimmers of the district showed the benefit of experience gained at the National Championship meeting and two provincial records were lowered during the season. Miss M. Simmonds successfully lowered the 100 yards ladies’ record to Imin 12 4-ssecs. and Master N. Simmonds lowered the <£o yards schoolboys’ record to 33 1-5 secs. Both these successful attempts were the result of constant and careful training and both competitors deserve great praise for their conscientious efforts during the season. GENERAL MATTERS. “During the season Havelock North Club reafflliated making a total of 11 clubs under the control of the centre, with a total membership of 1408. Although the total membership of affiliated clubs showed a slight decrease last year when compared with the 1924-25 season, we are pleased to report that a marked increase has taken place for the 192627 season and all clubs have taken a keener interest in the management of the centre. “The thanks of the centre are due to Mr. E. D. Ferry, lion, hanidcapper, Mr. L. Freedman, hon. treasurer, Mr
H. M. Bauchope. assistant secretary, and Mr. F. W. Melhuish, hon. auditor, for the very capable and conscientious manner in which they have carried out their duties dnring the past year. The centre also desires to take this opportunty of expressing our appreciation of the work carried out by club secretaries, delegates and officials of clubs and the centre, members of the baths staff and the press for their splendid support at all times.”
