LETTER FROM CHIEF KIWI.

"ThEAR KIWIS, —Have you been " counting the weeks to Christmas? I have been so busy that I have not hoticed the weeks slipping past, but to-day I was astonished to find thaierhtnt n, fwypmfw mfwn find that in three short weeks the joyful season will be upon us. and that I must begin to talk about Christmas competitions—so read very carefully what I want vou to do. From the senior Kiwis I should like an original Christmas story of notmore than 400 words. The story must have a New Zealand setting, and (this is must not be a fairy tale. This competition is open to all children between the ages of eleven imd fourteen years. There will be two prizes, one for boys and one for girls, of 7/6 each. From my junior members, up to 10 years of age. I want essays entitled “What I should do if I were Santa Claus.” Essays must, of course, bq entirely original, and must not exceed 200 words. There will also be two prizes for this competition—one for boys and one for girls. w of 5/- each. The prize-winning entries., together with some of the “next best,” will be published in the Christmas Eve Supplement. Needless to say, I expect hundreds of entries and am laying in a stock of pencils, scissors, and paste. Also, the Dragon, with his usual good nature. has offered to present me with a paper fan as a Christmas present and, with real Christmas spirit, to wave it gently to and fro during the time of judging. He surely predicts a heat wave at that time. Another important item which vou must be very careful about is that all Christmas competitions must reach me at the “Tribune” office not laeer than Friday. 16th December, before 5 p.m. As soon as they are judged. 1 shall hasten to obtain the necessary postal notes, and post in time to reach you on Christmas Eve. so that you will receive your prizes un the same day as your published. •Now, dears, I think I have made everything cl«r, but if there is anything you are not quite sure about, you must ask me during the coming week, so that I may reply in next week’s letter. What busy people we all are! I know that you have been having strenuous times with examinations, and I have thought about you all, and wafted you mv kindest thoughts for complete success. Three new Kiwis which we welcome this week are Alison Todhunter (Marton) and Dot Wilson and Morice Bond—both junior members. Betty Spenoe broke the rules by writing on both sides of the paper. A good budget of silver paper lias come in this week from Doris Price. Sylvia Thomas. Nancy Flack. Edna Morton. Iris Harding Iris Harper. Joan Wyatt, Molly Jefferd. Hazel Batten, and Kitty Colwill. My thanks to you all and mv love.
