NAKANAI OUTRAGE

COMMUTATION OF SENTENCES ADMINISTRATOR’S ACTION. GRAVE CONCERN. (Received 25, 8.55 a.m.) Raboul, Nov. 24. In connection with the Naitaiai massacre, twice within the past month all preparations have been made and the sentenced natives informed that they were to be hung in the morning. The last occasion was yesterday. To-day, the Administrator announced the commutation of the sentences to 15 years’ imprisonment. Grave concern has been caused by the attempt of the Administrator to ignore the Chief Justice, who clearly stated that he recommended mercy on stated grounds and assured counsel for the defence that no sentence would be ignored. The action of the Administrator is regarded as remarkable.
