WORKS OF ART
A SPLENDID COLLECTION. INSPECTION INVITED. Connoisseurs of good oil paintings sffiould not miss tn« opportunity afforded them of viewing canvasses of quite unusual merit, from the brushes of well-known artists, which are now on exhibition at Messrs Bone and Shaw’s auction rooms in Market street. The collection also includes a water colour by David Cox and a stipple-water bv Harding. An oil paintinrr “Kenilworth Castle,’’ (1851) by David Cox, is a most arresting picture, as is a delightful miniature in oils—a cottage scene—by the same painter, who was also responsible for an excellent water colour “Fordino- the Stream ’ <lBlll. Another striking work, bv F H, Henshaw, entitled “Trees.” reminding one of Constable in the shadowing, makes a distinct appeal in its woodland beauty and a painting in oils. “Church and Cottages,” by Thomas Harvey is deserving of .attention. A cattle scene, by Paul Potter, will repay detailed examination, whilst there are a couple of Channing presentations of Scotch and Italian types of girls. A stipplewater. “Virgin and Child.” fs still another gratifying picture and a group of sheep, bv Paul Potter, and a wood scene, by A. E Cox. completes the list, which are under offer by private sale. The pictures are quite cut of the ordinary and the public are invited to inspect them, irrespective of whether they are buyers or merely interested.
