HASTINGS MAGISTRATE'S COURT
BREACH OF PROHIBITION
■At the Magistrate’s Court In Hastings this morning, Mr. As M. Mowlem, S.M., dealt with the following police cases:— Joseph Hassett pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk and also with procuring liquor during the currency of an order. On the charge of being drunk defendant was convicted ana discharged, but was fined £2, costa 2/-, on the second charge. He was also ordered to take out a renewal of his prohibition order. UNPROTECTED SAW. . On the information of A. E. Macindoe (Inspector of Machinery), McLeod and Gardiner were charged with failure to afford adequate protection to ail persons using a circular saw. , Mr. H, Holderness appeared for the defendants, who pleaded guilty. The inspector stated that the guard on the saw had been erected but had been taken off when the saw was changed. An accident had happened and had the guard been on the incident would not have taken place. The department did not press for a heavy fine but only proceeded with the case so as to draw attention to the necessity of having protection to saws. A fine of £5 and costs 10/- was inflicted. DANGEROUS DRIVING. E. Burt was charged with driving a motor car in Heretaunga street tvithout a license, and further with driving in a manner deemed dangerous to the public. The defendant, who was undefended, pleaded guilty to the first charge but not guilty to the second charge. Senior Sergeant Hogan stated that the short facts of the case were that the defendant drove a car across an intersection at' about a rate of 30 miles an hour and the car knocked down a woman, who was not seriously injured. The defendant was fined 5/-, costs 10/- on the chaftte of having no license and on the other charge a conviction was entered, the defendant being fined £3, costs £1 16/-. CIVIL CASES. Judgment by default was given in the following cases:—H.B. Fruitgrowers, Ltd. v. L. W. Nation £5 7/-, costs £1 3/6; Ruroa Pareihi v. Puke Timu £3O, costs £4 16/6- , Judgment Summonses: — Tumanako Raihania was ordered to pay J. A. Bell £8 13/11, in default nine days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended for 28 days; C. Russ was ordered to pay H. C. McKuin £1 11/6, in default three days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended for 28 days; E. Wilson was ordered to pay W. H. G. Watson £l4 9/-, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if 30/- a month is paid.
