FIRES.
OUTBREAK IN HASTINGS. STACK OF HAY DAMAGED. The fire alarm rang at about 1.15 this afternoon, when the somdwhat strong breeze blowing caused quite a olt of people to make for the scene of the outbreak, which proved to be on a section at the end of Fitzroy avenue, near Pakowhai road. The Fire Brigade was promptly on the spot to find that the fire originated in a small stack of hay on the second which, on account of the wind, appeared to be dangerous. The brigade soon had the outbreak subdued.
NAPIER BRIGADE CALLED OCT.
GAS MAIN IGNITES.
Through a two-inch gas main becoming ignited, the Napier Fire Brigade received a call this morning to the Midland Private Hotel. It appears that some workmen who were carrying out repairs oould not see sufficiently owing to tbe main being under a stairway, and a lighted bicycle lamp was brought in. The escaping gas immediately The brigade were promptly on the scene, running water in to prevent the stairway from being further burned. The outbreak was put out with sacks, and very little damage Was done.
