OUTLOOK IN N.S.W. DEPRESSION’S EFFECT ON INDUSTRIES. INCREASED UNEMPLOYMENT ANTICIPATED. (By Cable —Press Assn. — Copyright.! (Received 21, 9.15 a.nt.) Sydney, Nov. 20. The general commercial depression which recently led to the closing of a number of mines and other concerns, or otherwise materially shortening the number of employees, is seriously augmenting the unemployment trouble in Sydney and elsewhere, and the unemployed ranks are certain to be increased with the Christmas season approaching and the bad times which are regarded as assuredly ahead. In addition to those thrown idle by the closing of works and the reduction of hands at various concerns there are about 12,000 casual unemployed registered at the State Labour Bureau. The Government is taking steps to provide relief as far as possible. It has already been arranged to carry out relief works of a reproductive character involving the expenditure of £23,000.
