Despite the statement that the British troops which proceeded to Hankow by the cruiser Vindictive were for the purpose of relieving the marines, it now transpires that they were sent at the urgent request ot the British Consulate authorities pt Hankow for the protection of lives and property on account of the threatening condition of affairs. The troops will not be landed unless it is absolutely necessary. It is not intended at present to take over the settlement bV force. This is the first time in history that British troops have proceeded beyond Nanking. The authorities state they are held in readiness if drastic measures are found necessary —(A. and N.Z.)
