WOOL
THE NAPIER SALE VERY SATISFACTORY CLEARANCE FARMERS IN HIGH SPIRITS. WELLINGTON RATES MAIN. TAIN ED. “Exceptionally good,’’ was Hie general comment at the conclusion of 'yesterday’s wool sale in Napier. Competition throughout the sale was exceptionally keen. Continental buyers having very elastic limits. Bradford was more in evidence than at Wellington. Very few lots failed to eel] under the hammer. The high prices are said to be accounted tor by the small offerings and wool wanted urgently. Whethei they will continue throughout the season is another matter. There is no doubt that fanners were surprised at the price their wool realised yesterday, and the comment after the sale showed that they were in jubilant spirits. The disposal of practically the whole of the catalogues means a big thing for Hawke’s Bay.
BROKERS’ REPORTS.
DALGETY AND CO.
Our catalogue totalled 2275 bales It was anticipated that the first sale of the season would he good, but no one expected such good nrices as were obtained yesterday. This was accounted for by the reports that have come to hand of the very low stocks hold by wool consuming centres. Bradford was more in evidence yesterday than they were in Wellington and they took large quantities of wool. At the Wellington sales the hnlk of the competition came from France and Australia, but we are certain that from anr own observation, that this did not happen vaster, day. The high prices may he accounted for bv the small offerings and wool wanted urgently, as undoubtedly there is a squeeze at the moment, and when this wool is received into the different centres it wil] be quickly absorbed and made into clnth , At the present time prices are 2)d to 3d a Ib. above London parity and it will be interesting to see how London opens out after receiving their cables on fhe market here. Judging hv the manner in which the wool was inspected on the show floors we expected keen competition and good prices. Of course the wools shown are very light conditioned and attractive, and parcels of this description generally command spirited bidding from America, who took a fair quantity of the wool offered. Bradford was in the market for all classes of wool, as was also Germany, Australia and the New Zealand mills were very active for light rood conditinned Romneys. The hnlk of the unshorn hoggets went to Bradford, and extreme prices were paid for this wool. Local mills were apparently very short and any halfhreds that were offered were keenly competed for hv the French and local mills. Necks, pieces and bellies were keenly sought after, and fetched extreme prices. We cleared 98 per cent, of our offering under the hammer. The following are some of the principal sales :—

“As is usual at the opening sale of the season a large percentage of the offering is hogget wool, and we are pleased to report that it opened up this season in very much better condition than last, being well grown, sound and bright. Owing to the excellent rains which have been experienced through the Hawke's Bay and Gisborne districts, and the mild winter, sheep have done well, which accounts . for the improved condition of the wool offered at today’s sale. There was a large attendance of buyers representing Bradford, the Continent, America, and Japan, as well as local mills, fellmongers and scourers. “From the outset competition was keen, and at times animated especially so when fine quality hogget was being submitted. Prices for fine quality wools were quite as good as at Wellington earlier in the week, but for stronger quality they were about the same, with perhaps in some instances a slightly easing tendency. From start to finish values held firmlv throughout, and we feel certain that clients will be highly delighter with the results. “The following list gives some of the prices realised:—

HAWKE’S BAY FARMERS CO-OP. ASSN.
There was an extra large attendance of buyers, yesterday, all sections of the buying trade being represented from Bradford, France, America, Germany and the Continent. Australian and Dominion mills also competed, as well as Japan. Altogether the Dominion sales focus for buyers an excellent opportunity for securing their needs direct in our primary markets, and so avoid all extra transhipping costs for foreign ports. This advantage tells in their bidding to the benefit of the grower, and accounts for the increasing attention paid to the New Zealand sales by all consuming centres.
A larger total offering was presented than seemed likely a week ago because of the broken weather for shearing, and out of a total of 15.205 bales we contributed 2875 bales. The opening sale at Wellington on Monday proved a very welcome surprise for growers. Values were anticipated as being likely to open up fully firm on last March basis, but the advances paid there were something in the nature of a surprise packet, and expectancy ran high here before the opening of yesterday’s sale. There is no quotable change to record on Wellington prices, but bidding was more spread here. Franco was reported to be the principal operator on Monday, but purchases for American account were strongly in evidence yesterday, though buying by French houses was very keen and Bradford also was well represented in the bidding. Australia and Dominion mills were keen operators,’ and there was practically a complete clearing of all offerings. Wool opens up this season showing a big improvement on last year’s clip, as sheep have wintered better. It is deeper grown and brighter as a rule, but for this early period in the. season it shows rather a surprising amount of condition, more especially where it comes off the flats, though coast wools and those from the Wairoa district are noticeably lighter. It was remarked that a good many of the hogget wools show wasty tips and tenderness. Present indications, however, point to the fact that growers in this district are seriously endeavouring to improve the type of wool produced. We included in our offering a number of well known clips, details of whjch are given below, also some 267 bales of poolled clips which sold at corresponding high prices. Compared with the November sale of last season, values show advances as follows:—For halfbred 4d to fid. fine crossbred 4d to sd, medium crossbred 31d to 4d. low and coarse crossbred 2fd to 3d, pieces sjd to 7d. bels. -Id to 4|d. locks 2d. There was probably the largest attendance of buyers yet seen at a Napier sale, representatives being present from all wool manufacturing centres of the world. Competition was spirited from the start, the first two lots selling at 19|d and 19d. Buying was very distributed amongst those operating. As against the opening sale last year halfbred and superfine wool? showed probablv the greatest advance, though the improved value for coarse wools was considerable and very. satisfactory for this .province. Continental buyers again were the dominating bidders for pieces. Our catalogue was representative of the best Romney cross wools. The condition of the clips was splendid, being not far behind the famous season of 1924-25. There was a record attendance of buyer*, and there were many new faces especially amongst the Continental seation which was very pleasing, and goes to prove the increasing importance *f the Dominion sale* . Prior to th* sale there was some speculation a* I whether the prices obtained in WeJ lington would hold. Happily the demand continued, competition being of the briskest. To us it appeared as if the bidding was spreading over the henches more than in Wellington. One well-known buyer, who was unable in Wellington to get anything secured in our catalogue a fair quantity of choice hogget wool*, besides other wools at prices which must be more than satisfactory to the growers. Still it wag the French and American interests that predominated. Bradford coming close behind picking up lots suitable to thejr t»quuenients. It appears to u* that price* were on par wiih Wellington; perhaps fine super wool* being a shade finer coarse slightly easier We would like here to warn those of pur clients who have still to sell their clips not to be too optimistic and expect a further rise. In our opinion we will bo very lucky if the present high range of values can be maintained for long. However there 1* no carry-over from last year, and other wool-producing countries are short in their clips, *□ there is every prospect of remunerative price* being obtained throughout the seaton.
