GIFT OF £100,000
TO LEEDS UNIVERSITY. BY ANONYMOUS DONOR. London, Oct. 17. A sum of £lOO,OOOO has been given to Leeds University by a dnor who wishes to remain unknown for tho time being. The money is earmarked for the new library buildings, the most important feature of the extension programme scheme. It is the largest gift g ver received by the university. The authorities are appealing foi £500,000 for the development and extensions, and this magnificent gilt brings the response up to £400,351. The following is the letter to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. J. G. Bailie, announcing th e gift: “My Dear Vice-Chancellor. —On the suggestion of my friend. Sir Charles Wilson (M.P. for Central Leeds;, 1 have decided to offer to the Leeds University—to detray the cost of the new library buildings—a sum not exceeding £lOO,OOO. 1 desire, for the moment, that my name should not be disclosed in the matter. Later it may be that th B university will honour mo by attaching my name to the library permanently.”
