FATE OF TROTSKY
RUMOURS IN CIRCULATION MOSCOW IS SILENT. STALIN’S SECRET CONFERENCE. (Received 19, 8.55 a.m.) London, Nov. 17. Rumours continue to b'e circulated regarding the fate of Trotsky. Moscow is silent, and the Soviet Embassy in Berlin described as ' ‘ obviously false” a report from Warsaw tnat Trotsky was shot while attempting to escape from Russia. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Riga correspondent reports that a secret conference of Stalin and his closest supporters at Kremlin considered the question of arrest, trial and imprison inent of Trotsky, Zinovieff. and others, or alternatively their banishment. The decision reached was not disclosed, but it is believed one or other of these methods will be adopted shortly. The real motive for hesitancy is the fear of investing opposition with the glory of martyrdom.—(A. and N.Z.)
