H.B. AUTOMOBILE ASSN.

TRAFFIC REGULATIONS CONSIDERED. FOUND GENERALLY ACCEPTABLE. A special meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association was held in Napier to consider the draft regulations for control of motor traffic. Mr. J. H. Edmundson presided. “Taking the regulations as a whole,” said Mr. Edmundson, “they are quite satisfactory, but there are a few small matters which require consideration.” Mr. Edmundson explained that the clause relating to the adjustment of head lights should be amended. He did not object to lights 4ft. 6in. from the ground being focussed at 75 feet, but low-set lights, which have an ascending beam, interfere with approaching motorists. Continuing, Mr. Edmundson pointed out that the regulations required that only one spot-light could be used and only in the direction in which the car was travelling. This, he considered, was unsatisfactory, as the spot light often had to be used in order to read sign posts or to find the numbers on houses.

The regulations dealing with the fixing of the various speed limits were then read, the members being of opinion that any local body should only make its by-laws in accordance with the general regulations, thus resulting in uniform speed regulations throughout the country. It was decided to request that the clause empowering local bodies to fix lesser speeds than those allowed by the general regulations should be withdrawn.

It was pointed out that provision was made that iu declared parking places no lights were necessary and also that cars would be permitted to stand under street lights within a distance of 31) feet.

It was then decided thnt the chairman and the secretary should draw attention to any further clauses that they thought required amendment. The meeting decided to congratulate the Public Works Department on the pains taken in compiling the regulations which, on the whole, were considered reasonable. The Taradale Town Board wrote advising that it had a reserve available near Otatara which would make an ideal camping site. It was agreed not to take any action in the matter until the conclusion of the negotiations with the Napier .Borough Council. Hie board was to be thanked for its offer. It was decided to draw the attention of the County Council to the dangerous state of the Matahoura bridge and the bridge at Dillon's Hill, also to a dangerous spot on the Te Aute road near the hotel.
