LOSSES ON STEAMERS.

REVENUE FROM CUSTOMS,

(Received 19, 10.5 a.m.) Canberra, Nov. 18.

In the House of Representatives, the Hon. S. M. Bruce, in reply to a question, said that for the six months ended September 30 the Commonwealth Line of steamers lost £243,780. The vessels made a profit on trips to Australia, but lasses on the return voyages. The Minister of Customs said the tariff during the year 1925-26 had yielded nearlv £40,000,000, of which only about £16,000 was received from protective tariffs, the balance being made up of revenue duty collections.
