AMERICAN MOTORS

AUSTR-ttlA’S PURCHASES.

Washington, Nov. 16. Trade between the United States, Australia, New Zealand and adjacent islands reduced nine per cent, for the first nine months of 1927, compared with the corresponding period of 1926, according to an announcement by the Department of Trade and Commerce. The trade amounted to 193,191,000 dollars, of which 154,614,000 represented trade with Australia only. Despite the decrease, Australia continued in first place in foreign markets for American automobiles and third in the consumption of gasoline. It also surpassed other foreign countries in purchases of American machinery. Australian imported 55,388 automobiles, valued at 36,000.000 dollars and more than 3,000,000. dollars worth of auto parts aud' accessories. The figures are considered significant in view of the imminent appearance of the new Ford, after almost a year of inactivity at the Ford plants. Observers here see the approach of the automobile saturation point will be given a dangerous impetus by the new Ford production, but Department of Commerce experts ridicule the suggestion, emphasising the fact that there is an enlarging market in South America.—(A. and N.Z.)
