ALLEGED BOOKMAKING
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Auckland, Nov. 17. A charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on August 6, was preferred against Harry Marks in the Police Court to-day. William Henry Bonner said he took a double from Marks at £2O to ss, on Beau Cavalier in the Grand National Steeples and Wharscilffe in the Grand National Hurdles. Both horses won, but When asked about paying out 'Marks said he would pay when he pleased. They had an argument, and witness said h 0 punched the accused. The following day he again asked the accused to pay him, and the accused said witness was anything but a gentleman because he called at his house for the money*.
Evidence was given by the police regarding other alleged bookmaking transactions on the part of the accused. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, hnd was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
