A memorable incident of Maori his tory was recalled at a sitting of the Tokerau Native Land Court at Whangarei. when Pouaka Wehiwhei, of Whangaruru. claimed possession of the Poor Knights Islands. The claimant says he is the last line descendant of the former chief of th a Ngatiwai tribe, who was the sole survivor of the massacre at the island. About the year 1822, an expedition from Hokianga rounded North Cape, intent on battle with some of the Bay of Plenty tribes, and on their way landed at the Poor Knights with disastrous results to the inhabitants. Pouaka is the owner of land at Whangaruru and at Matarau. His illiteraiy was explained by the fact that his aged grandmother. Hana Paingatai who is still alfve and has some reputation as a “wise woman,’’ prevented him as a child from assiciating with children "of inferior rank, so that he never went to school. The sitting is being continued to-day.
