HAWKE’S BAY BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING TO-DAY. LENGTHY ORDER PAPER. The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was held in Napier to-day. Present:— Messrs J. Clark Thomson (chairman), J. R. Kirk. G McKay. C. Lassen. J. Wauchbpe. G. A. ,Maddison. T. Cameron, A. King, W. Cuthbertson, and R. C. Wright. Leave of absence was granted to Mr W. Oates. TARADALE ACCOMMODATION. In connection with additional accommodation, the Taradale School Committee wrote stating that the report on overcrowding at the school has been considered, but the committee unanimously agreed that the question of reorganisation could not be so easily disposed of as it appears. It was decided to inform the committee that if the organisation of the school in accordance with one of the schemes submitted to the headmaster is caried out, there will be ample accommodation for every class, both at Taradale and at Greenmeadows. Further, the Board sees no adequate reason whv such reorganisation could not be put into effect: that the Board regrets therefore that it can L ake no steps to enlarge the present infant room as suggested. HAVELOCK’S REQUEST.

In view of the attendance not having been affected for more than two quarters bv mumps and measles, the Havelock North School Committee requested that the school should be regraded in 1928 on the 1926 figures instead of those for 1927. The secretary. Mr W. L. Dunn, pointed out that the regulations sufficiently protected such cases and it was decided to inform the committee accordingly. NAPIER SOUTH. In connection with the question of accommodation, the Napier South Committee advised that the present attendance would* warrant another teacher next year, but there would be no room available, and asked that the Board should take the matter into consideration. Mr G. A. Maddison pointed out that Mahora had been in urgent need of additional accommodation, and should be considered before that Referred to in the letter. The matteer was referred to the secretary and senior inspector to report on. STRIP OF LAND WANTED. In connection with the widening of the Porangahau road, the Waipukurau County Council wrote asking whether the Board would grant the necessary land, a strip 12 feet wide for the purpose. Mr Cuthbertson advised that the committee had agreed to give the neeessary area provided the council rebuilt the wall. The matter was referred to the secretary and the chairman. NO INCREASED GRANT i The Hawke’s Bay Branch of the New Zealand Farmers* Union wrote asking the board to reconsider its decision regarding making the *ull grant allocated as its portion of the expenses incurred by the comtnittee set up to investigate the Howa'd Estate. It was decided to reply that in the meantime the board regretted being unable to make an increased grant FINANCE, The statement of fund? showing a credit balance of £2,982 10/9 was adopted. The statement showing a balance of assets over liabilities of £1,140 2/5 was adopted. Accounts totalling £15,328 162 were passed for payment. APPLICATIONS FOR SUBSIDIES. The secretary (Mr, W. L. Dunn) reported that the following applications for subsidies had been submitted to the Department since last meeting:—Makaraks £9 9/-. Mangapapa £3, Ngamoko £2 12/6, Norsewood £6 15/-. Poukawa 10/-, Manga, teretere £2 7/3. £6 10/- and £8 5/-, Nelson Park £5 Norsewood £2 3/4, Nuhaka £2 10/-;’total £49 8/1. The following subsidies have been approved by the Department:—Manrjatore £1 10/-. Porangahau £4 13/11, Puha £2, Pukahu £l. Tolaga Bay £l, Hastings Street £5 10/-. Matamau £l4, Motuhora £lO 16/6, Ohurakura £4 10/-, Porangahau £5O 2/7, Te Puia Springs £2 10/-, Te Rehunga £9 3/4, Woodville £l2 5/-. Makaraka £9 9/-. Mangapapa £3, Ngamoko £2 12/6, Norsewood £6 15/-, Poukawa 16/-; total £l4l 13/10. A HEALTH CAMP.

The senior inspector reported that the school medical officer and teachers of the special classes wished to hold a health camp for the pupils of these classes. The camp would be held at Eskdale beginning on February 20, 1928, for two weeks. It would be necessary to raise about £5O and the promoters wished the board to jfflcially recognise the camp. The secretary (Mr. W. C. Dunn) informed the meeting that Miss Munro, physical instructor at the manual training school had already raised £lOO towards th© expense of the camp which would necessarily be heavy.

Members of the board expressed themselves as in sympathy with the proposal and decided to vote up to £l5 towards the expenses.
