WAIPUKURAU
NEW SPORTS GROUND PUBLIC MEETING. ” There was a large and representative attendance at the meeting held in Waipukurau last night in connection with th© holding of a queen carnival to raise funds for the improvement of the sports ground recently acquired by the Central Hawke’s Bay Sub-Union, in association with the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union. The chair was occupied by the chairman of the Sub-Union (Mil W. J. Wood). Air. AV. Johnstone proposed the election of a permanent chairman, also secretary. Owing to pressure of other duties Mr. P. IL Siuyrk, secretary pro tem, would not be available for office.
The chairman stated that remembering the spirit that had long since been displayed as between Waipawa and Waipukurau. it was the feeling in the former town that Waipukurau should shoulder the whole of the financing involved. The fact would he appreciated that Waipawa had a ground of its own in need of attention. .
In reply to Air. H. Duckworth, the chairman stated that the control of the ground and its improvements would of necessity remain in the hands of the Central Hawke’s Bay Sub-Union and Hawke’s Bay Rugb, Union. AU the money raised would of course be expended,on the ground. Mr. A. C. Holms suggested that to meet any local feeling in the matter it would be advisable for the SuhUnion to accept the co-operation of an advisory committee representative of the promoters of tho carnival, Obviously the control should be left entirely to the Suh-Union. The chairman agreed with this viewpoint. The Mayor (Mr. R. McLean) said that he fully appreciated the views placed on record bv the chairman. The ground was a local asset. Mr. Johnstone voiced the opinion that there would be general support for the effort and not only local. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. On the motion of Air. Johnstone seconded by Mr. W. Adams Mr. Gavin Black wa s unanimously eiertefl to the office of chairman. On the motion of Air McLean, seconded by Air Glentworth. Mr J. H. Hindman was unanimously elected as secretary and treasurer. The following executive was elected:—Messrs R. McLean. W. Johnstone. W. Adams, B. Mathcison, and H. Duckworth. GENERAL BUSINESS. On the proposition of Mr Adams, it was decided to close the carnivr at the end of April. It was arranged that military sjports and country ’‘queens” lie arranged, the following to be the conveners: Alessrs D. Taylor (sports) and' W. AlcCarthy (military); the secretary to arrange for the convener of the Country Queen Committee. Air W. Johnstone offered the use of his office for committee meetings, and was thanked lor same.
On Mr Mathieson's proposition, if was resolved 1 to open a bank account, and by ballot the Bank of New Zea land was chosen. The chairman and secretary-treasurer are to operate the account. Mr H. F. Fiv e years have elapsed since Mr Allan Wilkie last visited New Zea land with his Shakespearean productions. Since then his organisation has undergone great developments and his fame as a Shakespearean aetor'producer has increased steadily year by year. The Waipukurau visit (oh Friday) of this noted actor is being looked forward to with special interest. An educative disepssion took place, at the Power Board meeting yester day as to “what is power factor?’’ and as one member indicated this served to emphasise the need for setting up a technical committee as proposed by the engineer. The chairman observed that there was need for a simplification of the method of calculating power volume, but the engineers of to-day were guided by the procedure of the predeessors. Mr T. C. Donne, late of Ekotahuna and Masterton, has commenced in business as cordial manufacturer, in premises situated opposite the Wai puklurau saleyards. This marks the advanc 6 of a new local industry, which is being developed on up todate lines, including the sterilisation by electricity of the water used. PERSONALS. There passed away at the Waipukurau Hospital on Saturday Mr Jack Power, who had been resident in Wai pawn for some- time. Deceased was a returned soldier, having seen a considerable amount of service in France. He also participated in the Boer War, and had an honourable record. So far as is known he had no relatives in New Zealand. Arrangements for the interment of the body were taken in hand by the Returned .Soldiers’ Association, and members acted as pall-bearers’at the ft.neral, which took place at Waipukurau on Monday afternoon. At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Waipukurau District High School a resolution was passed, on the chairman’s motion, expressing sympathy with Miss Caughley, infant mistress, in th e bereavement sustained by the death of her sister-in-law. Mr H. J. M. Connell of the railway staff, accompanied by Mrs Connell, left on Tuesday on a holiday tour of three weeks duration, coring the course of which Auckland Well ington and other centres will be visited. Mr W. Adams, who had the misfortune to meet with a mishap last week whilst engaged in loading wool at the railway station, is still somewhat incapacitated, being only capable of attending to the supervision of th e loading operations still in pro gress.
FARMERS’ UNION. WOMEN’S DIVISION. A general meeting of the Waipukurau branch of the Women’s Division of the- Farmers’ Union was held on Tuesday, Mrs T. 11. Groomc (president) presiding over a moderate attendance, It was decided to distribute the proceeds of a social evening held on October 27th between the Community Chest and the local branch funds as follows:—2s per cent, to the former, the remainder to be deposited in the I'oSt Office Saving Bank. The president (Mrs Groome) secretary aud treasurer (Miss Beachen) are to act as trustees for the lAud. A vote of thanks was accorded the Waipukurau Orphans for the use of scenery in connection with the play, also to Mr L. Hawke’s for lamps for Che lighting effects. It was decided to adjourn the moi.t iug until early next year when further business in connection with the funds will be discussed, WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women's Institute, held yesterday was not as large as usCial Miss Wilson, president, presiding over an attendance of 12. A very welcome visitor was Mrs Bibby, president of the Waipawa branch. Mrs A. Young gave a very inter esting demonstration of raffia work and displayed some beautiful examples of her work, ' including hand nags, slippers, tea cosies, purses, etc. A photographic competition of well known people was won by Mesdames B. Mathieson and W. Sharpin. The committee were responsible for Ihe excellent afternoon tea dispense Ysterday’s meeting was the last for the present year, the next meeting being fixed for February.
