PARKVALE CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. The Mayor of Hastings (Mr. G. A. Maddison), who is president of the Parkvale Golf Club presided over a very good attendance of members at the annual general meeting, of the club on Monday evening. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the president congratulated the members on the excellent position, of the club. The great growth of interest taken in golf in this district was largely due to the ormation of the Parkvale Club; it was a feeder to the older established clubs, and by democratising the game had enabled many to take up golf who would otherwise have been unable to do so. The growth of Hastings would find the town a decade hence short of public parks and he hoped the time was not far distant when more acres might fie acquired, which would give not pnly ah 18-hole golf course, but also provide an area for other games. He assured the members that so far as the Borough Council were concerned, the club, had its full sympathy, and appreciated the good work the club had done in providing an added attraction to visitors. Mr. H. W. Abbott seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. OFFICERS ELECTED. The following officers for the year were elected:—Patron, Mr J. Beatson ; president, Mr. G. A. Maddison; vice-presidents, Messrs S. J. Heighway and D. G. Riddford; captain, Mr A. Lean; secretary, Mr H. S. B. Ribbands; treasurer, Mr E. E. Rixon; committee, Messrs. J. Vesty, F. Cowlrick, W. A. Greer, E. Robson, W. Hoar, N. Fippard, and R. Doubleday. The annual subscription was fixed as for the coming year: Men £1 12s, women £1 2s. juniors 10s, and an entrance fee of 10s 6d for all new members. It was also decided that for the months November to February inclusive players should be enrolled at 10s for the summer season. PLAN OF NEW COURSE. Mr. D. G. Riddiford laid before the meeting a plan of the course, with suggested bunkering prepared by Mr. A. J. Shaw, by kind permission of the Napier Golf Club. The proposal was that if the plan were approved, the alterations for which the council had already given consent, it should be carried out to a finality by the incoming and successive committees. Mr. Shaw, in a covering letter, stated that the course could be made one of the best nine hole courses in the Dominion with comparatively little outlay, and in fairness to himself he would like to supervise the carrying out of the work. Mr. Abbott moved and Mr. Cowlrick seconded a motion that Mr. Shaw’s plan be adopted as a permanent scheme and that the incoming committee be empowered to snend £5O this year in developing it. The motion was carried unanimously. THE WOMEN'S BRANCH. Mr. Robson proposed that the ladies’ branch should be run independently a s the Parkvale Ladies' Golf Club, on similar lines and the same relationship as between the , Hastings Golf Club and the Hastings Ladies’ Golf Club. The secretary (Mr. Ribbands) said he was strongly against the proposal. The large majority of women’s clubs were run aS branches of the men’s clubs, and m 1925 out of 98 men’s clubs only 13 had women’s clubs run independently as at Hastings, where the women leased the men’s links under certain restricted rights of play. In Parkvale’s cnse the women from the inception had given the greatest assistance. They had in the first year raised £7O for the club by a ball, and the Napier women players have this year raised £ll2 by similar means, efforts which would have been impossible had not the closest relations existed between the men’s and the women’s branches. By the applause from the women members which greeted the speaker’s closing remarks, Mr. Robson’s suggestion was proved to be unpopular. On the intimation from the secretary that the club was not registered under the Incorporated Societies Act, the president’s motion, seconded by the. secretary, that the incoming committee take steps to have the club made an incorporated society, was carried. The president presented the trophies to the following:— Ladies.—Club championship, Mrs D. Riddiford (holder of the Garnett Cup); runner-up. Miss Vera Stairmand; junior championship, Miss F. Webb; runner-up, Mrs 11. B. McLeod ; L.G.V. silver medal, Miss 1. Fippard; L.G.V. bronze medal, Mrs A. R. Scrivener; J. Beatson trophies, Miss I. Fippard 1, Mrs L. Freedman 2, Mrs J. Vesty 3; Mrs J. Garnett’s trophy for most improved player, Mrs A. E. Tqothill. Men.—Club championship, T. Garrod ; runner-up, W. Mathews; junior championship, A. Archibald; runnerup, S .Taylor; president’s trophy, D. G. Davies.
Mr. Riddiford proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, and on behalf of members hoped that the president would have a pleasant holiday and would soon return to Hastings restored to perfect health. The motion was seconded by spontaneous acclamation.
