BOARD OT GOVERNORS.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Napier High Schools was held last night. Present: Messrs P. Ashcroft (chairman), J. P. Williamson, C. D. Wilson A. Hobson, 1\ K. Castro, J. Vigor Brown, It. U. Wright and tl. Hill.

Leave of absence was granted to Dr. T. C. Moore. The Education Department wrote drawing attention to the provisions of th e Education Act which stated that no teacher must be employed who was not on the teachers’ register.—Received.

In a further letter the Department approved of subsidies as follows for the Boys High School:—(a) Eor tennis court £lOO (being Ils in tho £1 subsidy of £207); (b) for quadrangle £lO (£1 for £7). The lady principal (Miss D. Ar thur) in her report stated tnat rhe roll number was 303 (senior 146, junior 57), the attendance in both departments having been poor. In regard to a speak for the dis tribution of prizes. Admiral Lawson had been approached, but had not yet given a definite answer. The exhibition and sale of work resulted in £129 being taken, making the total voluntary contributions for the year £254.

The headmaster (Mr W. A. Armour) reported that the roll for the school was 286, with and average attendance of 266.5. The embankment behind the caretaker’s cottage had been completed, bringing all the protective works to the same level. The annual meeting including a social evening, is to be held in the school on November 19, when it was expected that the Napier Savage Club would supply the entertainment. The gross takings for the Dramatic Club entertainment were about £5O, of which amount £3O would be available- for the quadrangle. It was considered that the board could with confidence proceed during, vacation and complete the work at. this ground.
