NEWS AND NOTES A heavy downpour of rain fell in Waipukurau and the surrounding countryside yesterday and intermittently throughout to-day. being especially welcome in view of the occasional showers experienced of late having been insufficient to meet the needs of gardens and pastures A public meeting will be held tomorrow night for the purpose of drawing up committees and receiving suggestions in connection with the contemplated queen carnival, to raise funds in aid of the newly acquired sports ground. It is rightly asserted by the organisers that this ground will fill a long-felt want, and properly equipped, place the town on the “map” as far as sport is concerned. Therefore, it behoves everyone to pull together and make this project a sue. cess, so that sufficient funds will be available to commence work on the ground at the earliest moment
The new Ford motor reel for the use of the local Fire Brigade hns Wen completed, and delivery was taken <>l the vehicle on Saturday. The reel is well equipped with tool-boxes (on each side of the running-board), and shelves opening out on each side, also back, of the body, while two stands for fire extinguishers are provided. At th? back are placed fixtures for holding the hydrants, and along the top a brass rail for brigndesmen tn grip while standing on the runningboards. Very enjoyable games were played on Saturday, when six rinks were occupied—representing between 40 and 50 players The Dillon Shield fixtures will pro. bably commence on the 19th inst.,
