FIRST DAY’S RUNNING. The following are descriptions, by “The Watcher.” of the two principal races run at Wanganui yesterday:— WANGANUI CUP. Rapine was a slightly better favourite than the Piuthair-Clarinda bracket for the Wanganui Cup, and they were clear of Nukumai -and Ta jlonanm in the betting. Ngata and Opq were the outsiders, ft was a good race, and Piuthair won well, but Rapine would have beaten her had he got a good run. In the early part he occupied a good position, but if turned out a very bad place over the last half, and he could not get out until reaching the straight. Even then he was crowded, and the short straight gave him a poor chance of reducing Piuthair’s advantage. Clarinda made all the pace and in the early part it was slow, the first six furlongs taking taking Imin. 22sec. From that point onwards thev were moving fast, Novar and Ngata being nearest to Clarinda, and Rapine .on the rails, heading the bunch On the turn both Pinthair and Mint Leaf moved up outside Rapine, and he had no chance of getting out until the straight was reached. He just failed by a short head to get up. Clarinda weakened into a creditable third, with Novai well up, and then came Nukumai and Opa. Ngata faded back into seventh place, and the last pair were Te Monanui and Mint Leaf. The latter suffered some interference at the top of the straight, where he had • come up from last place to the leaders. • FLYING HANDICAP. Shirley was a good favourite, near, ly £2OO ahead of The Hawk, with plenty of money for Benzora and the famatete-Tukia bracket. Oration, Shirley and Tamatete began best, but the half-mile Benzora ran up and took the lead, to. lead round the bend from Shirley, Tamatete (going back), Civility and Tukia. A little further on The Hawk began to move up. Benzora led for home from Shirlev and Civility, with The Hawk coming very fast. Civilitv wore Benzora down and won brilliantly by a neck, while The Hawk flashed into third place only a head away. He ran a great race as he did not begin too well. Shirley had every chance, but could do no better than a fair four just in front of Oration and Deluge.
