Serious Motor Smash
Ob Ninety-Mile Beach ONE KILLED—FOUR INJURED. TWO CARS COLLIDE. (Par Pres* Association.) Aueklahd, Feb. 17. Th* "Star’s" Kawene correspondent wire* that a serious motor accident occurred at the Ninety Mile Beach race* yesterday afternoon, resulting in the death of a married woman and injuries to four others, their name* are:— KILLED. Mrs. Elizabeth Spender, wife of Mr, Paul spender, garage proprietor, ot Rawene. INJURED. Herbert H, Fltzherbert, minor Injuries and shook. Victor F. Eissnhurt, severe Injuries about the head. Reginald Molloy, sever* injuria* to head and knees and general shook, George W. Moore, broken left arm and aevere cuts and bruises. While making a sharp turn, a car, driven by Mr. Fitxherbert with Mrs. Spender, was crashed into by a car owned by Mr. Eisenhurt, of Kaikohe, containing himself and Messrs. Molloy, of Kakohe, and George Moore, of Ahipara. The injured were taken to Mangonui Hospital unconscious. Mr. Fitzherbert is progressing favourably in the Hokianga Hospital but is still suffering from shock. Both car* were reduced to matchwood. CAR PLUNGES OFF BRIDGE. WOMAN SUFFOCATED. Gisborne, Feb. 17. A motor fatality occurred near Turehau, on the East Coast road, late this afternoon. Charles Hansen, with his wife and daughter, was returning from the Tolaga Bay races aud, m turning a sharp corner on to a bridge over a stream, the car struck the approach post on the right, skidded, swerved, and smashed through the bridge rails, falling upside down into the creek ten feet below. Mr*. Hansen was pinned under the car and suffocated. Her husband and daughter were thrown clear, escaping with bruise*.
