It is currently reported in Auckland that the Superintendent and Provincial Secretary of that Province intend proceeding to England by the next steamer to arrange for special settlements under the new Auckland Waste Lands Act. Thus would the Northern provincial magmates follow humbly in the steps of the great Prime Minister. The Auckland press is opposed to this new piece of provincial diplomacy.—lt is now announced that the contemplated trip has been abandoned.
A telegram from the Bluff, by the Otago, give the following as the result of the two chief events of the Victorian races:—Victoria Derby—Mr J. Tait's b c Melbourne, by Panic, Myth, 1 ; Dr J. Bathe's b c Stockbridge, by Stockham, Granny, 2 ; Mr G. Livingstone's b c Scanmag, by Talk o' the Hill, Norma, 3. A splendid race; time, 2 minutes 46 seconds. Melbourne Cup—Mr A. Chirnside's b g Haricot, 1; Mr J. Wilson's b g Protos, 2 ; Mr C. Dublin's b h The Diver, 3. There was an immense crowd on the course. We believe that some of the knowing ones, who speculate on probabilities, and pride themselves on their astuteness, have burnt their fingers. The " prophets" are all at fault—the winners being rank outsiders.
