THE MELBOURNE RACES.
The Cup.—Nineteen horses started out of 26. Horatio, Blue Peter, Papapa, Fugleman, Friendless, The Hook, Menindie, were scratched at the post. Arrow made the running for Goldsbrough for about three-quarters of a mile, when Haricot went ahead about four lengths. He was never caught, winning easily by about three lengths ; Protos, 2 ; Diver, 3. Time, 3 minutes 37 seconds. It was a dead sell to the sharp fraternity, Haricot not being; mentioned in the betting. Haricot, Break-o'-Day, and Goldsbrough carried five pounds extra, and Fitz-Yat-tendon three pounds extra. Lurline was second to last. Papapa was scratched, having fallen dead lame on the day before the race; he was hardly able to walk. Iu the Maribyrong Plate twenty-two horses started. The race was won by Wilson's Maid-of-all-Work, Richmond second, and Barbarian third. The Derby was won by Melbourne, Stockbridgo second, and Scanmag third. Menindie, Polidon, Blink Bonnie, Presto, The Hook, Torchlight, Meera, and Minnie also started. Menindie was the favorite at the start. There was a splendid finish. Melbourne made a tremendous rush, and took inside place from Stockbridge. He then shot to the front, and won a grand race very cleverly by a neck, there being only half a neck between the second and third horses. The time was very fastonly 2 minutes 46 seconds. In the Essendon Stakes seven horses started. The Diver and Hero ran a dead heat for first place. Protos was third. Time, 3 minutes 44 seconds. The stakes were divided. Gloom was amongst those that started.
Newbojd won the Hotham Handicap, Woollomi second, and Fugleman third. Calumny also ran in this race, but was nowhere.
Maiden Plate of £IOO, with £2OO added '.—Scanmag, 1; King Phillip, 2; Menindie, 3. Time, 2 minutes 36 seconds. Railway Stakes of £5, with £IOO added: Stockbridge, 1; Polidori, 2 ; Barnard, 3. Stockbridge carried 71b penalty. Melbourne and Mute were scratched. Stockbridge was made a hot favorite for the race and won easily. Time 2 minutes 16 seconds.
Kensington Stakes of £2oo:—Richmond, 1; Fraternill, 2 ; Manuka Colt, 3. Richmond won by two lengths. Time: 1 minute 9 seconds.
