Those who have read the terrible anathemas issued by the Pope against Freemasonry will be surprised "to learn that he was ever accepted and initiated a member of that ancient and honorable Order ; yet such is the case. In his youth Mastai Ferretti was admitted as a member, and took the solemn .oaths of love and fraternity to his brethren. As Pope, ho now bestows on them his curse and excommunication. The Italian Freemasons have retaliated by cxp-el/ing him from the Order, accusing him of haf/jng broken his vows. The assigned ground pi expulsion was his refusal to answer .certain ,ehar£ps preferred against him by the Qrder in .1865,
